【Teaching Colors #4】TPR: “Point to something red.”

TPRは、Total Physical Response の略です。日本語で「全身反応法」と訳されています。San Jose State UniversityのJames Asher教授が1969年に発表し、その後多くの人が研究・実践し、テキストが出版されています。

TPRは、簡単に言うと、先生が英語で指示をし（command）学習者はその指示通りに動きます。言語で反応するのではなく、行動で理解を示すのです。子どもの母語獲得のプロセスを英語教育に取り入れた指導法です。

最も基本的なTPRは、先生が「Stand up.」のような短いcommandを出し、子どもは何も言わずに動きます。English Timeシリーズでは、各レベルの巻頭にClassroom LanguageとしてTPRのページを設けました。Level 1のClassroom Languageをご覧ください。1ページに6つの動作を提示しています。

Stand up. Sit down.

Listen. Quiet.

Stop! Point.

Open your book. Close your book.

Take out your pencil. Put away your pencil.

Make a circle. Make a line.

見開き2ページの12の動作を授業の最初に毎回おこなうことで英語モードに切り替えさせることができます。子どもが動き回らず、自分のスペースにとどまったままで可能ですから、ウィズ・コロナの教室でもおこなうことができます。

これで、Pointという動詞がわかったので、Point to the ceiling. Point to the floor. Point to the door. Point to the window.と発展させましょう。次にPoint to something red. Point to something white.など、教室にあるものの色を使ったcommandsを出します。あらかじめ教室のあちこちに色紙を貼っておいて色紙を指差させると、低学年の子どもでもアクティビティの理解が容易です。

線画のワークシートを配布して、Listen and Color（英語で色塗り）のアクティビティをすることもできます。

「Now we’re going to do some coloring. Point to the clown’s hat. Color the hat yellow. Point to the flower. Color the flower red. Point to the clown’t bow tie. Color the bow tie blue. （中略）Point to the gloves. Color the gloves any color you like. 」のようにパターンのある平易な英語の指示を出します。
