Description: Deep in the Forest

伝承話のretold版です。Goldilocks and the Three Bearsのクマと人間が入れ替わったお話で、Little Bear and the Three Peopleとでも呼べます。文字が無くイラストだけでストーリーを理解させる、すぐれた絵本です。Puffins絵本のELTコンサルタントをしていた時期に資料として入手した貴重なタイトルです。1976年出版で50年経っているのですが、今も新作のように楽しめます。これからもずっと色褪せないでしょう。A picture is worth a thousand words!

文字が無い絵本は、子どもと絵について話し合って英語を引き出します。子どもにある程度の英語力が必要です。この日は、2年前に読んだA-Wの絵本を復習し、子どもたちに音読させました。夏休みで初めて参加している子どもも喜んで読みました。この絵本のJames Marshallのretold版は先月読みました。

いつもは彩子先生に担当してもらっているアクティビティですが、本日は私のソロ授業です。このアクティビティは子どもがどんどん話したがります。まず、2枚ある絵の片方を見せて、英語力のある子どもに「You are very good at describing a scene. Could you tell us what you see in this picture?」と当てると「We see a house in the forest. We see a girl and three bears, maybe father, mother and a child.」と上手でした。2枚の絵の違いを話すための言語材料を全員が聞いたことになります。

5. Read: Deep in the Forest

「This is the opposite version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We don’t have language in this book. We will talk about the picture and we will tell the story. 」と説明して読み始めました。元のお話の英語をそのまま使う子どももいれば、自分なりの英語でdescribeする子どももいました。

読み終わってから感想を聞くと「最後にクマを追い払わないでペットとして飼えば良いのに」という子どもがいました。新しい視点で驚きました。良い機会なので、日本のアーバンベア問題のことを話しました。

6. Word Search: Goldilocks

初参加の子どもも含め、みんな上手に説明します。「I found all the words. You can choose.」と言う子どももいて脱帽です。extra wordsを見つけた子ども続出で、先生はついていけません。へへへ。
